Clogged sewer hints and faq
Clogging of drains is a common occurrence in most households. The bathtub shower, sink or toilet get back filled with water when the drains are completely blocked. The blockage must be cleared through this build-up of water, and it is likely that the owner of the house will be unable to do so with conventional household chemicals or remedies. At times like this, calling a professional plumber can cost you a fortune. It will cost more if the blockages are severe or extensive. In case of multiple blocked drains simultaneously at a particular time in your home, the cost will escalate and you will regret for not having inspected your drains before.
What are causes of blocking of drains?.
The primary reason behind drain blockage is carelessness and negligence. Improper usage of the drain strainer to filter out the food particles and rubbish going down the kitchen drain will definitely lead to a drain clog. These particles if not caught in a strainer, will accumulate in the drain and lead to blockage. Cooking oils and grease aggravate potential clogs by lining the pipes. Excessive flushing of large amounts of toilet paper can be responsible for clogging in the toilet.
Tossing waste items not meant to be flushed down the toilet also worsens the situation. Certainly, items like paper towels, sanitary napkins and baby wipes individually or as a group can cause a blockage in due course. Accumulation of hair in the pipes can lead to clogging of bathroom sinks, showers and bathtubs. Other things like soaps, shampoos, hair gel, toothpaste, etc intensify the clogging problem since they tend to accumulate and build up, thus adding to the block.
It is sometimes very unfortunate that these blockages can occur irrespective of what we put into our drains. Plumbing and drains problems are also caused by scale build up, tree roots, damaged pipes due to rusting and faulty drain lines.
In case of a clogged drain, here are few things that you can do.
You can attempt to clear clogged drains yourself by using acids or other chemical products designed for this purpose. As a matter of fact using these chemicals can have an adverse effect on your fixtures, pipes, your health and the environment. Fortunately, more natural methods for clearing clogged drains also exist. Running boiling water through the drains regularly is one natural method available. You could also use vinegar and baking soda. Household vinegar is run down the blocked drain; next, cover the drain liberally with soda bicarbonate. The mixture should be allowed to sit in the drain for at least 15 minutes; then attempt to wash the blockage away by pouring boiling water over the drain to rinse it.
Proper examination and prevention is better than facing a blocked drain.
The plumbing system works in the same manner as your car or any other machine. So it also requires regular maintenance. You can be vigilant about what’s going on with your drains and pipes and perform part of the inspection yourself, as you are most familiar with how the drains behave. Get the drains regularly checked by a professional plumber or drains contractor to avoid worries and expenditure on severe drain blockages. Having a plumber to snake through your drainage system once an year could be a good remedial measure. If your pipes are particularly prone to becoming blocked or you experience frequent drain clogging, it might be advisable to have your drainpipes snaked on a more regular basis. All major drains must be checked regularly by CCTV inspections.
Regular expert inspection of your drainage system can ensure that your pipes (and not your pockets) are completely drained and cleaned out!.
