Clogged sewers can be a thing of the past with these necessary tips

A blocked drain is not a joke and every home owner has been a victim of one at some time. In case of a complete blockage, the bathtub, sink, shower and the toilet can get filled with waste water that you have used. At this moment, the root cause of the blockage must be cleared in spite of the flooded water and the chances are sleek that the house owner himself, with the help of household remedies, will be able to get rid of the blockage. At this point of time you might think of taking a professional help but this can cost you a lot. It will cost more if the blockages are severe or extensive. In the event of multiple drains becoming clogged simultaneously in your home, you will wonder why you did not have your drains inspected, as a precaution.

But do you know how drains get blocked?.

The primary reason behind drain blockage is carelessness and negligence. If you fail to use the drain-strainer to prevent food matter and refuse passing into the pipes from the drain, clogging of the kitchen sink’s drainpipe can occur. These food scraps buildup inside the pipework, causing blockage. Additionally, cooking oil and/or grease may gather inside the pipes or on top of a worsening blockage. Too much toilet paper flushed down the toilet invariably causes drain blockage.

Tossing waste items not meant to be flushed down the toilet also worsens the situation. Items like baby wipes, paper towels and sanitary napkins can cause a blockage immediately or over a period of time. When hair becomes stuck in pipes and gathers inside, showers, baths and sinks may become blocked. Other things like soaps, shampoos, hair gel, toothpaste, etc intensify the clogging problem since they tend to accumulate and build up, thus adding to the block.

There can also be times when the things you put in the drains are not responsible for the blockage. Scale, tree roots, deterioration of pipes that are rusted and crushed drain lines have also been known to cause plumbing problems.

There are a number of rectification methods for a drain clog.

You can give a try and clear the blocked drains with the help of acids and other chemicals which are specifically designed for this purpose. These chemicals, however, can actually be harmful to your pipes, your fixtures, your health and the environment. But the good news is that you can clear the blocked drains in a natural way too. One such way is to put boiling water into the drains regularly. The use of baking soda and vinegar is an alternative measure that can be taken. Household vinegar is run down the blocked drain; next, cover the drain liberally with soda bicarbonate. Let the mixture sit in the drain for at least 15 minutes, then pour boiling water over it to rinse and hopefully wash the blockage away.

Inspect and Prevent Instead.

The plumbing system in your home is just like any automobile, machine, or tool. The system requires regular inspection and maintenance. You can be vigilant about what’s going on with your drains and pipes and perform part of the inspection yourself, as you are most familiar with how the drains behave. To avoid the situation of an extremely clogged drain you should get your whole drainage system inspected by a professional drains contractor on a regular basis. It is advisable to have a plumber “snake” all of your drainpipes at least roughly once a year, as a means of preventing blockages. If your pipes are particularly prone to becoming blocked or you experience frequent drain clogging, it might be advisable to have your drainpipes snaked on a more regular basis. Taking a CCTV video scan of the major drain connections should be done at regular intervals.

Regular expert inspection of your drainage system can ensure that your pipes (and not your pockets) are completely drained and cleaned out!.
