Drains Pipes installation, what to do 1st
Local building laws and procedures have to be complied with whenever you execute sewage or pipework repairs and installation by yourself or use a drains services company.
If you are changing your current drainage, or installing a new system, you will most definitely be asked to show detailed plans of the implementation that you have in mind and it will need to be overseen as the work moves forward to ensure that it is compliant with local building rules. If you are simply replacing damaged sections of the sewage, in most circumstances they do not need to be informed.
Surface water is basically water from rain and is handled differently from dark waste water in a modern sewage development. In older properties this surface water can find its way into the foul water sewage system, but more generally it can also end up in a watercourse, surface water sewer or soakaway. To stop any nasty odours emanating from the drains a combined system will discharge the surface water into the foul water drains by way of the gully traps. Nowadays hygiene and recycling considerations have led to a mandatory separation of surface water and sewage water. Foul water should never be connected to surface water drainage system with any new drainage development you undertake. The Building Regulation Department will be able to guide you on any details or procedures you may require for repairs or replacement of your sewage.
Designing the path of the waste passageways will be your first task. The route should be as short and straight as possible, this will help to reduce future maintenance problems and costs. The pipes should run straight with a gentle incline. With the help of a surveyor’s site level, you will be able to determine the fall of a drain over a distance. In the absence of one of these, create a datum point and set levels with a hosepipe filled with water and compute the fall from the datum in this manner.
You need to ascertain that the foundations and structure of the building is safe when digging to install your drain trench. The substructure of the building should not be undermined by your digging if the waste pipe runs parallel to it.
When fitting in a new sewage system, you should not dig the trench too long before placing the pipe as the trench could collapse. The pipes should be laid quickly and the ditch back filled after the system has been examined thoroughly and tested as required.
Depending on the depth and soil conditions, the trench may require support. Avoid risks when working in the ditch. It is better to provide support to the trench walls than allowing the trench to collapse. You must make the trench as narrow as possible while leaving enough room to work inside it. The bottom of the ditch must be smooth and clean, free of any objects that make it uneven such as stones or bricks. If the material at the base of the trench is not appropriate then you might have to bring in new material.
For pipe support do not use bricks or other hard materials in the trench. This will damage the pipe and must never be used as temporary or permanent support. The bedding should be made compact to fit around the pipe joints. You will need to provide a continuous and uniform support for the complete length of the pipe.
Make sure that your plans are made in such a way that drain rods are within reach of every part of the network of pipes. This need for drain rod access can be easily achieved by keeping the pipeline straight and in short sections. In case of any change in the direction of the pipework it should be provided with an inspection chamber for allowing drains rod access.
DIY plumbing and drainage is certainly within the bounds of most DIY enthusiasts without immediately resorting to a drain services company.
