How often do you need to drain a private residential pool? Average sized?
We’re buying a home with a pool and have no idea about pool maintenance. Do you need to drain a pool every season, every month, etc. If not do you need to add chemicals if you do not drain the pool?

i have a pool and we have had for about 2 or 3 years now we have never drained it. We keep it really clean.
You don’t drain the pool – ever – unless you are replacing/repairing. You may have to winterize to keep the pipes from freezing. If it is already drained and its a vinyl liner pool, the liner is shot and will have to be replaced. If it has water in it already and you are ready to open the pool for summer, clean out any gunk like leaves, etc. and then shock it with shock treatment you can get from pool supply company. Then, use the vacuum to clean up all the stuff that fell out of the water when you shocked it. Then, balance the chemicals. You have to keep the pool running while you shock it and balance it. If in doubt call your local pool company.
Take a sample of the water down to a pool supply store and ask them to test it. The water needs to be replaced when the dissolved solids exceed 20 or 30ppm (not sure). They will tell you. You wont need to replace all the water just a percentage depending on the reading.
It will vary depending on the water source (mineral content).
I replace 1/2 my water about every 2 years. We live in Southern Cal and the water has a high mineral content.
WE HAVE HAD A POOL FOR 22 YEARS AND IT WAS DRAINED ONCE SO THEY COULD ACID WASH IT AND RECOAT IT,IF IT LOOKS LIKE A POND AND YOU CANT SEE THE BOTTOM YOU MAY HAVE TO DRAIN IT TO CLEAN BOTTOM(possibly resurface) BUT USUALLY YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD POOL SUPPLY PLACE (take in a water sample)WILL SELL YOU CHEMICALS TO STRAIGHTEN IT OUT.OR GET A POOL SERVICE(ca-ching ca-ching).ALSO IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING POOL SHELLS HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO POP OUT(concrete and fiberglass) OF THE GROUND WHEN DRAINED OR ALMOST DRAINED.GOOD LUCK AND ENJOY IT..
Never with the exception if your Cyan uric acid level is too high or your total alkalinidy is way too low – dump half the pool water. Since your knowledge is poor, check this site for important information before you hurt yourself or others -
