How to take on the clogged up drainage problem

How to take on the clogged drainage problem

Do you know what the best way to unblock drainage is? Using a plunger is the most effective and fastest way to solve this common household problem. The entire process of opening plugged drain pipe with a plunger is simple and straightforward. But the last thing you want to do is be too aggressive and pulse to quickly. Place the cup of the plunger exactly over the drainage and push it downwards and upwards with short sharp movements that generate suction within the drainage and pipe. So any material that is stuck into the bathroom, sink or tub drain should come out with the upward pull on the drains plunger. Some washbasins and bathtubs are provided with overflow openings that have to be blocked temporarily with a wet cloth for the plunger to develop effective suction.

Instead of using your plunger you can apply commercial products containing chemicals that can dissolve the clog, for instance concentrated waste pipes cleaner. But it would only be recommended to resort to using chemicals after you have tried fixing the problem with a drainage plunger. Leave the chemical for a few minutes so that it loosens the blockage, and then use hot water to rinse out the drainpipe, taking care not to splash yourself. As a precaution you should wear clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty or corrosive chemicals on. And since plunging can throw water in any direction you might want to consider eye-wear in order to protect you from any chemicals. The chemical product comes with specific manufacturer’s directions; it is important to read and follow them carefully.

You can use a pipe wrench or pliers to unscrew the P-trap if you are unable to remove the clog with the plunger, this will give you access to the pipe. Now this is going to get messy so be prepared with a towel and bucket to clean up the mess. Use an electrical tape to encircle the jaws of your wrench so that you can get a better grip on the pipes and also maintain their chrome finish without scratching them. Once the P-trap is removed, check the trap for any solid materials obstructing the pipe opening. Unfortunately if you can’t find anything, the problem probably runs a lot deeper and could be anywhere between the trap and the soil stack.

A toilet auger can be used for unclogging the toilet. A drain pipe snake should be used if you are trying to unclog your sink or tub. Plumbers drainage snakes have been specifically designed to enter deep into the narrow pipes. With the help of the adjustable handle, you can literally drill into the blockage and pull out the blockage from the drain pipe. Once the obstruction is out, reconnect the P-trap and run hot water through the drainpipe to confirm that it is clear. Make sure that all the connections are properly fitted and sealed, and also check the P-trap for leakages.

After trying all of these methods and you still have a water flow problem, it is time to contact a drainage contractor like Dynorod or a local plumber. Some common issues that are beyond the capabilities of the common homeowner are stoppages in the soil stack or the sewer service by tree roots or even a collapsed pipe which could be the result of old age or deterioration of the pipes because of Mother Nature or an unforeseen Act of God.
