The most-valuable steps for handling a flood warning

Floods can be caused by high winds and heavy storms, even in areas that are not accustomed to witness such events. A whole month’s quota of rain can fall in a single day in areas that have never witnessed floods, owing to the rapidly changing weather of today. One should be well equipped for any circumstances including flash floods.

Although one cannot avoid natural disasters, you can surely protect your home from flash floods by following a few safety measures.

Make provisions that restrict water from entering the house.

If you are expecting heavy rains or storms to hit your area, particularly if you live in a flood-prone area, you should cover your doors, or even windows, with metal sheets, sandbags, or plywood. Silicone sealant is another thing that you can use during floods, to make sure that water doesn’t seep in into your home. However such measures last only for a short period of time, but they definitely help you to prevent your possessions from getting wet.

Switch off any external services.

It is always important to shut down the mains utilities like gas, power, water etc. You should also remember to unplug all your electrical appliances and store them at high places, on the second floor, if possible. Water entry into homes often rises several feet but this will mean that the second floor is dry and any items you have stored there will not be impacted.

Be mindful of your appliances and furniture.

Check that the high priced furniture and equipment are stored at height or on the upper floors.
If your house is a bungalow and therefore lacks a second floor, use blocks or bricks to elevate these items. Be sure to remove carpets, curtains and even internal doors.
Stock them up at a height so that they are screened from being exposed to water.

Use higher grounds, particularly your house’s second floor, to store personal items such as important papers and pictures. If possible, put them into a waterproof container, maybe a food storage container. Otherwise, to make sure the important papers are safe against water, place them in sealed plastic bags.

Find a safe place for all external items like rakes. It can be dangerous for others if these articles get caught in floodwater easily. Also put more valuable items that could float away into a locked building such as you garage. A heavy item like wheelbarrow can be very easily float if kept in the open but can be prevented from floating and damaged by floodwater if stored in the garage.

Once you have received a flood warning, there are several important tasks you must carry out immediately.

Keep you ears and eyes open for any sort of information.

To keep yourself updated about the broadcasts and announcements, listening to the radio. Be sure to cooperate fully with local authorities and emergency services. If they require you to evacuate, follow them and do not delay as you will put yourself and your helpers at risk.

In such situations, it is quite probable for power to be unavailabile, which means that you must hurry to do everything you need to during the day. Doing work in darkness becomes tedious and unsafe. Keeping batteries and torches in places you will remember is a handy tip for coping with an emergency.

Alert your older neighbours to any new warnings, so they can get ready for the floods.

Avoid moving out of your homes. Any attempt to leave your house can prove deadly, especially when it is raging during floods. Take notice of that fact that your car can float in two feet of water whereas six inches of rapidly flowing water is sufficient to make you fall.

Cars and household pets should be removed to a place where they will be out of danger. It is best to stay on the second floor of your house once you receive a flood warning. Do not attempt to swim through a flood when it is raging, as there may be items suspended in the water. You can either be swept away or be knocked over by objects that are in the water.

Floodwater is dirty due to the presence of sewage and any contact with it should be possibly avoided. It would indeed be a pity to survive a serious event such as a flood, only to fall ill from contact with polluted water. Riverbanks, sea defenses and river bridges are the most dangerous places during floods, so avoid going near them. Many instances can be sighted leading to the destruction of bridges and defenses due to the alarming effect of floods.
